Take Action: 6/6/2026 - Urgent Action: Stop the MAGA ICE Border Bill & Warrantless Surveillance! 

Dear Southern Lehigh Democrats,

Recently, the Republican-controlled Senate pushed through a massive, $70 billion federal funding bill for ICE and US Customs and Border Protection. Instead of investing in our schools, expanding healthcare, or lowering grocery and utility bills for working families, this bill pours billions into unchecked executive authority and mass deportations.

Worse yet, Congress is rushing to reauthorize Section 702 of the FISA Act, the law that allows the government to intercept the text messages and emails of everyday Americans without a warrant. With extreme actors managing our national intelligence apparatus, the potential for this dragnet to target local organizers, journalists, and everyday citizens is an immediate threat to our privacy.

Senate Democrats managed to delay the surveillance vote this morning, but we need them to hold the line. At the same time, we must pressure the House to kill the border slush-fund bill.

At a moment when we should be celebrating Earth Day, Congress is preparing to vote on a bill that could significantly weaken one of our nation’s most important environmental protections.

The ESA Amendments Act of 2025 (H.R. 1897) is scheduled for a vote tomorrow, April 22, and we need immediate action.

Protect the Endangered Species Act

The Endangered Species Act has been a cornerstone of wildlife conservation for over 50 years, helping to prevent extinction and preserve ecosystems across the country and right here in Pennsylvania.

This bill represents a major rollback of those protections.

It would:

Take Action:  02/07/2026  SLDC: Take Action: The SAVE Act Back Again! And Defund DHS

Dear Friends of Democracy,

There are TWO very serious items moving through congress that need our attention and action. The first is to limit access to voting and the second will expand ICE’s powers. We must call our representatives to vote “no” to both!

Voting Restriction

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or SAVE Act is back and the House is voting on it this week! This legislation seeks to amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 tightening the documentary requirements for voter registration.

Why: The primary purpose is to limit who can vote.

Those disproportionately affected include:   

• Married women who have changed their last names, many of whom don’t have birth certificates matching their legal name;
• Naturalized citizens who could face additional barriers and intimidation;
• Military members, tribal citizens, and working-class Americans, who may not have easy access to these documents.

The legislation would also likely prevent the most convenient methods of voter registration: registration by mail, online registration, voter registration drives, and auto registration. In-person registration might become mandatory. This requirement would affect anyone registering to vote in a new state after moving.

Refuse to increase DHS funding

WHY: ICE is using the funds to prepare for mass round-ups. ICE has already purchased a warehouse in Berks county and has its eyes on other local warehouses. DHS should not receive more funding so that they can imprison our neighbors or ourselves illegally. Nor should they be given more funds after murdering two U.S. citizens. This organization needs reform or the terror they are creating will only grow.

I’m calling to urge "insert name” to oppose any additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security, including ICE.

I’m deeply concerned about reports that ICE is purchasing warehouse facilities near our home to expand detention operations. There have also been documented cases in which people have been mistreated in ICE custody, including U.S. citizens, and many constituents — myself included — view this as a serious failure of oversight and accountability.

I do not want my tax dollars or my home area to be used to expand an agency whose actions have caused preventable harm. DHS and ICE should not receive increased funding until there is serious reform of ICE.

I’m asking the Representative to vote against any appropriations or supplemental funding that expands ICE’s detention capacity or operational budget.

Yes, while early in the new year we need to take action based on current events.

To: Senator John Fetterman

Why: Lack of Congressional guardrails against unconstitutional executive actions is unacceptable!

Senator Fetterman, I am writing as a constituent who supported you because you pledged to listen, to govern thoughtfully, and to uphold the Constitution. At a moment when that commitment is being tested, I am asking plainly: will you still listen and act appropriately?

This is not about personalities or partisanship. It is about constitutional--and Congressional-- responsibility.

As Senator Booker has stated, the fact that Maduro is “a brutal dictator who has committed grave abuses” does not suspend the Constitution. He reminds us that “The Constitution is unambiguous: Congress has the power and responsibility to authorize the use of military force and declare war. Congress has a duty of oversight. Congress must serve as a check, not a rubber stamp, to the President.” He further warns that “We face an authoritarian-minded president who acts with dangerous growing impunity. He has shown a willingness to defy court orders, violate the law, ignore congressional intent, and shred basic norms of decency and democracy. This pattern will continue unless the Article I branch of government, especially Republican congressional leadership, finds the courage to act.”

Senator Schiff echoes this responsibility: “Congress has the power to declare war and check the president, including this one who flagrantly violates his oath of office and breaks the law. That puts not just our citizens at risk, but endangers our interests abroad, too.” He further notes that while “Nobody will mourn for Nicolás Maduro,” military action that benefits Trump’s allies does not justify constitutional violations. As Schiff makes clear, Donald Trump has said the U.S. will "run the country.” Those are actions of an occupying power focused on controlling oil proceeds, not a defensible interpretation of American law or values.

I agree with Senators Booker and Schiff. Many of your constituents do too. We do not support unlawful uses of power, constitutional shortcuts, or public approval of bullying tactics. That is not the United States we support and expect you to defend.

I urge you to demand hearings, investigations, and real oversight. Please insist on enforcement of checks and balances and accountability from this administration and this Congress. Silence or acquiescence at this moment carries lasting consequences.

I am appealing to you in good faith—as a voter, a constituent, and an American who expects Congress to act.

SLDC: Take Action: Protect ACA Subsidies Now

Hi Friends of Democracy!

Congress is finally taking action on the Epstein files through the discharge petition process — and now it’s time for them to do the same for affordable healthcare.

A new discharge petition would force a vote on HB 5145, a bill that restores the Affordable Care Act (ACA/ObamaCare) premium subsidies set to expire. Without these subsidies, over 20 million Americans will face steep premium hikes in 2026.

According to a recent Robert Wood Johnson Foundation analysis:

• 7.3 million people will lose subsidized ACA coverage
• 4.8 million will become uninsured
• Communities could see $32.1 billion in lost healthcare revenue in 2026, putting hospitals and care systems under serious financial strain

That means higher costs for everyone — not matter how they're insured or not — and reduced access to care in our region.

We need Representative Ryan Mackenzie to keep his caucus’ promise to address healthcare after the shutdown and to protect the families he represents. He should sign the ACA subsidy discharge petition immediately.

Republicans promised to take up healthcare legislation after the government shutdown. I’m calling to ask Representative Mackenzie to keep that promise by signing the discharge petition for HB 5145, which restores ACA premium subsidies.

Most of his constituents support extending these subsidies. Many are already facing large, unaffordable premium increases for 2026. If millions lose their coverage, our hospitals and clinics will also be strained, which will raise costs and reduce access for everyone — including Medicare and employer-insured families.

SLDC: Take Action PA Budget at the cost of climate change

Hi Friends of Democracy!

Republicans continue to sell our future for short term gains. The PA budget has passed and while Democrats were able to increase government spending the cost was Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). The goal of RGGI was to cut carbon emissions from the power sector which would have encouraged increased focus on renewable energy. Our future generations deserve better. Please reach out to our PA Senator and Representative to let them know we are paying attention and do not agree with this vote. 

Who: State Representative Milou Mackenzie and State Senator Jarrett Coleman

Script: I’m calling because I’m very concerned that the PA budget bill has abandoned the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). While increased spending may address short-term needs, sacrificing RGGI undermines our long-term responsibility to future generations.

RGGI was designed to cut carbon emissions and encourage renewable energy investment. Walking away from it sends the wrong message — that Pennsylvania is willing to trade away environmental progress for short-term gains. According to the Acadia Center, “This abandonment of Pennsylvania’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) will cost the Commonwealth a projected $20 billion in foregone revenue over the coming twelve years, removing the state’s most promising, cost-effective policy lever to reduce harmful emissions from the power section – and leaving Pennsylvania without any meaningful climate and energy affordability policy.”

I want you to know that your constituents are paying attention. We do not agree with this vote, and we expect our elected officials to stand up for policies that protect both our environment and our economy in the long run.

SLDC: Take Action – Hold Ryan Accountable for Misleading Claims

Hi Friends of Democracy!

Rep. Ryan MacKenzie is misleading constituents by claiming he supports healthcare and veterans benefits because he voted in favor of a budget stopgap bill that ends these benefits on 12/31/2026.

Why: On September 18, Ryan voted for the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2026, intended at the time to prevent the government shutdown. The bill clearly states that its provisions end on December 31, 2026. Yet Ryan is using his vote for the short-term, stopgap bill to misleadingly claim that he truly supports healthcare and veterans benefits! And because the majority of Democrats have rejected the bill, he dishonestly blames them for the current government shutdown. This is political theater, not leadership!

Script: Call Ryan’s office and demand honesty. Here’s a sample message:

This past week, President Donald Trump announced by executive order that the Department of Defense would be renamed “The Department of War.” Within days, he posted on social media an AI-generated image depicting himself as an army general attacking the Chicago skyline with military helicopters and flames.

This is not leadership—it is the glorification of violence and the promotion of war against an American city. By every decent standard, this is outrageous. We must urgently contact our legislators and demand they respond.

PS - By the way, the name and ethos have international implications that runs counter to Trump’s campaign promise to keep the US out of wars.  The topic of his broken campaign promises are for another time.

To a Democratic Senator Fetterman:

Take Action: Medicare Coverage to be Decided by AI?!

Why: Donald Trump and Dr. Oz (head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services or CMS) want to let Artificial Intelligence (AI) choose which procedures Medicare will cover for individual patients -- with AI companies being paid based on how much money they save by denying people’s coverage.

This cruel ploy comes as Medicare faces an urgent funding crisis thanks to Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill. None of this “cost-saving” would be necessary if Trump and the GOP weren't driving up healthcare costs and starving our healthcare system of funds.

Take Action 1:

           Who: State Representative Milou Mackenzie and State Senator Jarrett Coleman

           Why: Pennsylvania families are paying more for electricity because competitive alternatives such as new clean energy projects—like solar and wind—are stuck waiting for approval. These projects could lower our bills - now and in the future - and reduce our dependence on expensive fossil fuels, but outdated red tape and slow processes are blocking them. State lawmakers can fix this by speeding up the approval process for clean energy and electrical grid upgrades, so more affordable power can reach our homes faster.

         Script: I'm reaching out as a concerned Pennsylvanian worried about how high our electricity bills have gotten and will continue to rise—and how the PJM Interconnection, our regional electrical grid operator, is making things worse.

Right now, PJM is delaying hundreds of clean energy projects that could lower costs and create the competition necessary to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. These delays keep our bills high and block job-creating energy solutions that are ready to go. Experts say fixing these bottlenecks could save families like mine over $500 a year.

Please use your voice to hold PJM accountable and push for common-sense reforms. An Objectionable Nominee, Another Objectionable Budget Consequence, and Continued Contact on the Budget

This week’s actions are for Senators McCormick and Fetterman.

#1 Casey Means, a wellness influencer, is Trump’s nominee for Surgeon General. Although she attended medical school, Means is not a licensed physician, an implicit requirement of the position. Her lack of practical medical experience and criticism of mainstream medicine make her a questionable candidate for the position of America’s Doctor.

Please contact Senators McCormick and Fetterman to encourage them to vote “No” on Means’s nomination. Below is a sample message:

I am writing today to urge you to vote NO on the nomination of Casey Means to become the Surgeon General. Means is NOT board-certified as a Medical Doctor, does not hold an active medical license, has never completed a medical residency and lacks the specialized training or significant experience in public health programs required by law to become Surgeon General. 

Casey Means is yet another multimillionaire, an anti-vaccine advocate, who has made her money selling "alternative" health methods, which often are not effective or are outright scams.  For example, she supports the viewpoint that pasteurized milk is not recommended to ensure milk safety.  Instead, she suggests "getting to know your local farmer," not a helpful suggestion for the vast majority of the American population.

#2 Scores of horrendous consequences from the massive cuts in the budget bill, if passed by the Senate,  are beginning to dawn on the American public at-large. One possible situation for Pennsylvania residents is this: What happens to residents in assisted living places if Medicaid is cut?

According to the Pennsylvania Filial Responsibility Law, children become responsible for those expenses and any related debt that their parent has accrued. Nursing homes use Pennsylvania’s filial support law to seek judgments against children when a parent cannot pay for care using the parent’s assets and the parent cannot qualify for medical assistance, such as Medicaid benefits. This might impact you or your family in the short- or long-term.

Losing Medicaid would impact 2,781,015 Pennsylvanians.

Contact Senators McCormick and Fetterman to express your disapproval of cuts to Medicaid, which would have the primary effect of eliminating nursing homes for many seniors and a secondary effect on their families, who would then be left to bear the unexpected financial burden of caring for their parents.

I’m calling to urge [SEN NAME] to oppose the Senate budget reconciliation bill and its harmful cuts to vital government programs relied upon by his constituents.

Policymakers must carefully consider how crucial Medicaid is for these seniors and their families to ensure the continued provision of essential health and care services across the Commonwealth and to all Pennsylvanians.

Who: Jarrett Coleman, PA State Senator

Why: Many Pennsylvanians take public transportation to school, work, medical appointments, and other essential errands. But PA’s public transportation is losing funding through federal cuts and rising costs. The Pennsylvania Senate is proposing the “Transit for All PA Funding Package” bill to ensure the continuation of public transportation, paid for in part by excise taxes from companies like Uber and Lyft, plus nominal increases in car rental and lease fees. We must support this so that our neighbors who rely on affordable public transportation can continue to live their lives.

The administration is ignoring the law by forcibly removing innocent U.S. residents from their homes, shipping them outside our borders and legal system without due process. This alarming violation of fundamental rights is not just a threat to Kilmar Abrego Garcia, whose case has already drawn widespread attention—it is a threat to every American.  

Disturbingly, there have been discussions within the administration about sending citizens to detention facilities outside of U.S. jurisdiction. These so-called "prisons" represent a chilling erosion of our nation's values and legal protections. If we do not act now, no one will be safe from this dangerous precedent.  

Who: Congress

Why: America was founded on the right to Due Process, innocent until proven guilty, the rule of law.  Our current leadership is destroying this most sacred process. We need you to call your representatives to use their platforms to call out this injustice and stand up for our rights as US citizens and residents.

I am writing/calling to you today as a concerned [citizen/resident], deeply troubled by the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an individual who is currently being detained outside of the United States. This situation raises significant concerns about the violation of fundamental American rights, particularly the right to due process as guaranteed under the Constitution.  You don’t protect America by breaking her laws. 

As a nation built on the ideals of justice, fairness, and the rule of law, we must hold ourselves to Constitutional standards when it comes to protecting these principles for all U.S. residents and citizens. No individual should be deprived of their right to due process or subjected to imprisonment outside the jurisdiction of our legal system.  

I respectfully urge you to take immediate action to ensure that Kilmar is returned to the United States to face a fair and lawful judicial process. Failing to do so not only undermines the foundational values of our nation but also sets a dangerous precedent that jeopardizes the rights of every American.  

I trust in your commitment to justice and human rights. Together, we must reaffirm our dedication to upholding the rights and freedoms that define us as a nation and rectify this situation.

SLDC: Take Action Week 4/14/25: Town Halls, SAVE Act Senate, and Fair Districts

Now is the time to take action for a fairer and more just future. We must come together as a community to require town halls, where our collective voices can be heard loud and clear. It's equally crucial to urge our senators to vote against the SAVE Act, which threatens to undermine the voting process. And, let's rally behind HB 31 by calling on our Pennsylvania representatives to support the creation of fair voting districts. Finally, consider canvassing for Mark Stanziola, the only democrat on the ballot running for court of Common Pleas. Together, we can make a difference.

#2 SAVE Act in Senate

The SAVE has passed the House and will move on to the Senate as SB 128. This will disenfranchise many voters. Please reach out to the Senator’s and request they vote “no”

I'm calling to demand that [SEN NAME] oppose SB. 128, the SAVE Act, which will create unnecessary barriers to voter registration and disenfranchise countless Americans, especially women, seniors, and low-income citizens. #3 Fair Districts PA

Fair Districts PA is an effort to create fair voting districts that represent the people of Pennsylvania — not partisan politicians or outside interests. Success  means the end of manipulating  voting district boundaries to favor one party (aka gerrymandering ) and is crucial for democracy, ensuring every voice is heard and represented. We must act urgently to support HB 31, a vital step toward fair voting districts and equitable representation. Demanding town halls and rallying community support can amplify our message. Contact your state representatives today and urge them to champion HB 31. Together, we can make fair voting districts a reality. Let’s ask State Rep Milou Mackenzie to support this bill!

#2 TakeAction - Contact your Congressperson to demand that Congress not cut Medicare funds.

Why: The spending bill was approved with a vague agreement to cut $880 billion from federal spending. Now, Congress is working on what cuts will be made. We must reach out often to remind them, hands off Medicaid! Republicans have pledged to make big cuts, and Medicaid is the assumed target, no matter what they say publicly about being opposed to that. Medicaid is invaluable to those receiving it. It is millions of people's affordable access to healthcare.

Trump is spending an absurd amount of taxpayer dollars for personal trips to sporting events and his homes in just over two months of his presidency. Script: Medicaid is the safety net for seniors, children, and the working poor. Medicaid funds Meals on Wheels, children with disabilities, and 63% of seniors in nursing homes! Tax the rich and protect those who need protecting. Be our voice in Congress and do not vote for any budget bill that includes cutting Medicaid.

Hi Friends of Democracy!

Why: I’m writing to urge you to take immediate action to oppose the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 22). This bill is disguised as an election integrity bill that will disenfranchise millions of us.

Federal law already prohibits noncitizens from voting, and states already have systems in place to enforce this.  All legislators should oppose redundant legislation that makes our government more cumbersome!!

Possible script for calls or emails: (Please note there are two separate scripts. One for Democrats and one for Republicans)

Talking points for Fetterman: "The SAVE Act specifies that applicants who register by mail must present their documentation in person. While the bill does not expressly address online registration or voter registration drives, those methods are typically treated like mail registration, so the bill would likewise appear to require that applicants show up in person at a government office before the voter registration deadline. Talking point for Republicans: Additionally, this bill has the potential to harm many of your own constituents—young and older voters, or voters with low-incomes, for example—those least likely to have easy access to or resources to obtain documents like passports or birth certificates.  Policies like this have already been shown to cause harm, like in Kansas where a similar law blocked over 35,000 eligible voters from registering before it was struck down as unconstitutional.
